With this guide, you will be able to get the perfect Valentine's Day gift for that special someone in your life, no matter how long you've been dating.

Valentine’s Day comes around every year. While you might love it, it can also make things a little awkward. You wouldn’t give someone the same Valentine’s Day gift when you’ve only been seeing each other for a month as when you’ve been together a year. If your relationship is new, you might feel like you don’t know them well enough. But if you’ve been dating a while, it can feel like you’ve already bought him everything. You don’t want to come on too strong or look like you’re not trying hard enough. So what should you buy your special someone? Try using this guide to help you choose a gift that’s thoughtful but not creepy.

A Few Weeks

The most awkward time to buy a Valentine’s Day gift has to be when you’ve only been dating for a few weeks. Should you even exchange gifts when you’ve only just made it official? Some people would say no. During this period, you can get away with not getting them anything. But you do risk having them getting you something. It’s best to be upfront with them and ask if you want to exchange gifts. You might both decide that it’s much too soon and you’ll wait for next year. The one thing you mustn’t do is come on too strong and get them something hugely romantic.

Two or Three Months

One you’ve been going out for a couple of months, you might feel more comfortable giving gifts. If you decide to exchange them, don’t get too sappy or try to be overly romantic. In fact, it’s better to get them something that’s more like a gift from a friend. Buy them a book or a DVD. You could get him some chocolate liqueurs or some colorful socks. It shouldn’t be anything too huge, and you don’t have to spend a lot.

Three to Six Months

After the three month mark, your relationship starts to grow. You might want to get a bit more personal with a Valentine’s gift. One of the things you can consider is something that ties into your relationship. By now, you might have created some inside-jokes and discovered lots of shared interests. You still don’t want to spend a lot of money or get too extravagant, but you can branch out a little more. Get them something quirky and silly that makes both of you laugh. Or buy them something that ties into one of their hobbies.

Six Months to a Year

Now that things are developing even more in your relationship, you can get more intimate. You can spend a bit more money and perhaps go on a romantic dinner date. You no longer have to worry too much about freaking him out. But there might also be an expectation for you to step up your game. If you only get him socks when you’ve been seeing each other for a year, he might be disappointed.

A Year to Two Years

Once you’ve passed a year together, there’s even more you can get for him. By this stage, you might be thinking about marriage or other long-term plans. You’ve already spent lots of time together, but life can get in the way. So why not take the opportunity to have some alone time? A gift of some sexy lingerie and massage oil is like a present for both of you. For something more innocent, you could try something new together outside of the bedroom. Some of the best Valentine’s gifts for him are things you can do together. Or you can give them something to do on their own so they can have some alone time!

Over Two Years

When you’ve been together for more than two years, you’ve already spent a couple of Valentine’s Days together. If you’ve not bored of it by now, you need to start coming up with creative ideas. If you want to do something special, you can make a gift or experience yourself. It could be sending them on a scavenger hunt around the house, with you waiting at the end. You might write them notes or make handmade cards. Or, if you prefer, you might buy them a gift they’ve been asking for. You’re probably more comfortable with buying larger gifts at this point. But just make sure they spend some money on you too.
If you’re still stuck for gifts, remember that spending time together will always be appreciated too. You can always plan to spend the day with him as your gift to him on Valentine’s Day.
