Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a morning person. At all. I dread the feeling of lifting my head off my pillow and shedding my warm cocoon of blankets every day. Yet, paradoxically, I am an expert at getting myself up in the morning. Even though I hate it, I have devised the perfect system for me to reliably get my ass out of bed. How do I do it? By following a few simple tips and tricks which I am about to share with you!

1. Maintain a Routine
Do your best to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. If you do, your body will recognize this rhythm and it will become more natural. Falling asleep at night and waking up in the morning will both become easier. It will also improve the quality of your sleep, so you’ll feel refreshed when you get out of bed. I know it can be difficult to establish a bedtime, but the benefits are too great to ignore.
2. Help Yourself Get Quality Sleep
Experiencing a good night of sleep is essential for waking up the next day! There are many different ways to achieve this: try using a melatonin supplement, take the time to wind down before going to bed, and make your environment as comfortable as possible. Try a couple different things and find which method works best for you. Ensuring that you get enough sleep is also important. When you set your sleep-wake routine, as previously discussed, make sure you’re getting around seven or eight hours of rest.
3. Don’t Hit Snooze. Ever.
I’ve learned that if I hit snooze once, I’m likely to hit it again, and again, and again…and again. On the other hand, if I force myself to get up the first time my alarm rings—no matter how much I don’t want to—it’s much easier. After a while, you’ll get in the habit of waking up as soon as you hear your alarm.
4. Make Your Room the Perfect Temperature
Throwing the covers off is a much more difficult task when your room is roughly the temperature of the Arctic tundra. Make the transition easier by turning up the heat a couple degrees every night. That way, your room will be warmer when you wake up and emerging from under your blankets won’t be as terrible. This is especially important in the winter when your room will naturally be colder.
5. Drink Water Before Falling Asleep
Nothing is a better motivator for getting up in the morning than needing to go to the bathroom. Drink some water in the hour or two before you go to sleep, and when you wake up, you’ll definitely need to go. Be careful with this trick, though, because if you drink too much water, you might wake up in the middle of the night. Experiment with timing and amount of water to find the perfect balance for you. In addition to helping you wake up in the morning, drinking water will keep you hydrated throughout the night. This is really good for your body! If you often wake up with a headache, it will help a lot. Also, it is great for your skin. Wake up feeling hydrated and beautiful!
6. Wake Up to Natural Light
Studies have shown that sunlight helps people wake up in the morning. Natural light in the morning is part of our natural sleep-wake cycle. It makes sense, right? Having the bright, beautiful sunshine coming through your window in the morning is the perfect morning pick-me-up. So, leave your blinds up when you go to bed so you’ll have some glorious sunlight to wake up to! The Vitamin D will also help you feel more energized. As an added bonus, this synchronicity with our sleep-wake cycle will help you sleep better, which will in turn make you feel well rested in the morning! So really, you’re getting double the benefits with this trick.
7. Be Held Accountable
Schedule work meetings, coffee shop hangouts with friends, breakfast dates with your SO, or a workout with a buddy in the morning. Not only will this give you something to look forward to (see the next tip), but it will also hold you accountable for being awake at a certain time. Nothing like some old-fashioned peer pressure to get you motivated! Also, studies have shown that when we know we have something important to do, our bodies will wake us up naturally. You might even wake up before your alarm, which is a much more pleasant way to start the morning.
8. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
If I have no incentive for getting out of bed, then I won’t do it. However, if I plan to go to the coffee shop on campus to pick up a Chai Tea Latte or go to the dining hall for pancakes, I look forward to starting my day. Another thing that will help is setting an alarm that you like—either a ringtone that sounds pretty or your favorite pump up jam. I find that waking up to one of my favorite songs immediately puts me in a good mood. You can do this easily if you use your smartphone as an alarm!
All in all, it’s most important to feel motivated to wake up in the morning. Whether your best motivator is seeing friends, exercising, or eating a delicious meal, do what works best for you! Staying healthy and getting quality sleep will also be a major help.
