Sharing is caring!

Always being on the go to the next thing can be exhausting. Not only that but you rarely have time to stop and think about your spiritual self and health. Now before I lose you stick with me here because I know what you must be thinking. “My spiritual self? Girl, I don’t have time to think about these kinds of things. Plus that sounds like some hippy mumbo-jumbo.”

Well, you would be wrong. Your spiritual self is just as, if not equally, important as your physical and mental health. So if your spiritual self is lagging, you are bound to see just as many terrible results as if your mental and physical health were poor.

Now that you realize that maintaining this is just as important as your other health let’s look at some ways you can get more in touch with your spiritual self.

What is the Spiritual Self?

Before we can dive in, let us define it first for those who still don’t understand the concept/ do not see it as being important.  The website Spiritual River defines the spiritual self as “a way to put a label on how we see ourselves or how you see yourself spiritually. This is an important idea in recovery because our sense of progress in this area is based almost entirely on self-perception.” So when they say recovery, this can mean in any form of coming back to a level place emotionally.

They go on to say that “In other words, we don’t rely on others to validate us when they see us praying or meditating. We do it for ourselves, for our spiritual growth, not to show off for someone.” So the only standards you have to live up to are your own. How you maintain your spiritual self is only between you and your higher power.

I love this definition because it so perfectly summarizes the complexity of your spiritual self but also its simplicity. Now if that is too complicated, Caracolores gives a more straightforward description by saying the spiritual self is “that unseen part of who we are that provides our physical self with insight, intuition, and other ways of knowing and being beyond what our five senses experience in the physical world.”

So essentially what both definitions are saying is that your spiritual self is that intangible part of ourselves that ultimately dictates/ has a significant effect on the mental and physical health status. You have to keep an equal balance on all three to truly keep order in life.

Now that we have a definition let’s look at ways we can connect and help our spiritual selves thrive or better yet feed our spiritual self-care.

Finding Your Higher Power

As you saw in the first definition, Spiritual River talks about a higher power. Now, this does not have to be a religious thing. It is almost the opposite of that. This is more of “feeling connected with a greater energy source, with God, a Higher Power, Godself, or Universal Oneness” (Desert Alchemy).

So if you do seek religion as a higher power, then it still fits for you. That is what makes your spiritual self so amazing. It has no limitations and can be accessed in any way, shape, or form that you prefer.

You will find that many addiction recovery websites talk about finding a higher power. Now, this doesn’t mean that you have to be going through a difficult time to find your higher power, but finding it can be just as satisfying for any path you’re going down. So for any form of recovery, “Spirituality is a key component of recovery for most people. Believing in a higher power can guide them to inner peace, motivation and purpose” (Drug Rehab).

Engage with Friends

Because it is so free-flowing, searching for your spiritual self is something you can talk about and engage in with friends. Working on any form of health can be even easier and better when you involve outside people.

For me, this would be my friends and I talking about our existence and our purpose. This is something I often think about because I mean life is crazy so sometimes it’s nice to try to make some sense of it with others.

I have a tattoo that quotes Mark Twain about life and what our life’s purpose is. So I take this stuff pretty seriously. Now I know that this thinking may seem crazy out there to even discuss but knowing that people close to me are thinking about it as well seems to help. It made me feel more centered and connected to the world. I would suggest you give it a try as well to try and find your higher power. This is a significant first step to becoming more in touch with your spiritual self.

Meditation

The next best step to becoming more in touch with your spiritual self is meditation.

Why does this matter?

The purpose of meditation is to be “primarily concerned with caring for the mind. Although our body and mind are intimately related and interconnected, they are quite different types of phenomena… thus when we talk about the true purpose of meditation, we are talking about the attainment of enlightenment, the attainment that enables us to fulfill not only our aims but also those of all others. This is the entire purpose of and the only reason for engaging in meditation” (Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive).

I only recently got into meditation because just like you, I thought it was something that would not help me very much.

But let me tell you, it is nice to zone off into space where you are not thinking about the hectic day you just had or your plans for the rest of the week. Now it does take some time to get into it, and luckily there are some fantastic apps/ websites that can help facilitate your meditation.

Two that I love is Headspace and Yoga Download. Yoga Download offers yoga courses but also meditation courses where someone talks you through your meditation. Both are equally amazing and can help get you started with your meditation experience.

Psychic Check-In

Now, this is one of my favorites because it is something a little different but still a tool to help you get more in touch with your spiritual self. If maybe meditation or finding your higher power is not your thing, then you could always chat with a psychic!

Keen is the most extensive network of psychics that provide psychic readings to help you find answers to any questions you may have about love, relationships, career, and so much more. They are not some sketchy website that is a money hungry scheme. No, Keen has over 14 million satisfied customers with over 11 million reviews. If that many people have tried it and reviewed, you know it is something worth checking out.

How can you actually use this?

You can choose to either call or instant message with one of over thousands of available psychics. All you have to do is select one from the category you are most looking seeking guidance in and begin your journey.

I personally have given it a shot and chatted with a psychic advisor geared towards relationships. It is quite the experience and something that helped me to tune in to my spiritual self. So you could still be thinking, “ok sure but it must cost a fortune.” Well, it is not! You can get 10 minutes for just $1.99, and some advisors even offer your first few minutes free for those that are extra skeptical. This way you are not really losing anything if you are not into it. So it doesn’t hurt to go over and give it a shot.

Before Calling…

Huffington Post actually published a fun article about the 5 Things You Should Know Before Consulting a Psychic. I will give you the condensed version but click here to go check out the whole article.

1. Don’t have a specific agenda. It’s okay to want to know certain things as a result of your psychic session; your psychic will probably allow you to ask questions as well. But if your sole intention for booking a session is to get “the” defining answer to a specific question, you’ll likely end up disappointed.

2. Let the psychic guide the session. You’re paying a professional psychic for their time; allow them to do their job and lead the discussion where it needs to go.

3. Listen for credible details. An authentic psychic will be able to spontaneously provide you with (sometimes odd or unusual) tidbits of information to affirm that they are indeed connecting with you properly. Don’t expect to hear the exact “code” word you had with your deceased wife or the secret signal you had with your boyfriend.

4. Are you booked with a psychic or a medium? All mediums are psychic but not every psychic is a medium. A medium is someone who can willfully connect with one or more of your loved ones who have passed on; a psychic is someone who specializes in communicating intuitive information about your life, relationships and your future. Find out in advance if the practitioner with whom you’d like to book a session is a psychic, a medium, or both. It will aid you in tempering your expectations.

5. Terminate any session that doesn’t feel right. No reputable psychic will ever predict your death, foretell a tragedy, give you winning lottery numbers or inform you that you have a curse put upon you and your family and that to remove it, you need to return repeatedly. A reputable psychic will also not keep increasing their fee with each visit, or expect that you buy ancillary merchandise from them on a regular basis.

Spiritual Support Groups

Remember how I said before that sometimes connecting with an outside source can help you to strengthen your spiritual self? Well, why not seek out more than your immediate friends who too are searching to become more in touch with their spiritual selves.

There are so many places and ways you can find spiritual groups to connect with. I myself am a part of a few on Facebook. I find them to be very helpful and reassuring when I have questions or just need a safe space to explore my spiritual self.

The best part?

They give me different perspectives I had never considered and challenge me not to be afraid to continuously explore. These groups are a huge part of why I started meditation and other practices to access my spiritual self. They help me not to be afraid to ask the questions I would think are dumb or silly.

And what is nice is that while the group ranges from super spiritual to semi-spiritual, there are people there that are on my same level. This makes it easier for them to identify with me and me with them. There are many more spiritual support groups that you can join. Desert Alchemy lists a few that fit many different categories you may be interested in (click here to check them out).

If you haven’t quite worked up to joining groups like this, then definitely keep a group of friends that you can share these thoughts with. It is just so nice to have other people that you can talk with about this stuff and who support you.

So Give it a Shot

Taking care of the spiritual self is not essential to many people. However, it is something you should put on your radar because it is just as pertinent as your mental and physical health. As Desert Alchemy says, “Spiritual self-care is as important to a balanced life as food is for the body [because] when we care for ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, we naturally find a sense of peace and meaning for our lives.” You only get one body and one life, so take care of it, mind, body, and soul. Make an effort to take the time to try these practices out, and you will find yourself getting more in touch with your spiritual self.
