Can Long Distance Relationships Work?

For many, a long distance relationship is the equivalent to a chronic migraine: just unnecessary. Many flee at the idea of one. While a long distance relationship is not easy, I feel that it has positive influences on couples who can deal with the distance. Here are a few of the benefits to being a long distance relationship.

You know they care

No one just agrees to be in a long distance relationship for the heck of it. It is something that is a true test of loyalty and trust for both parties. To even agree to be in a long distance relationship is no easy decision. You know they must care about you a great deal in order to agree to such a heavy arrangement. Only the strongest of couples can get involved in a long distance relationships without fear of it collapsing without the physical components.

Not just a physical romance

I know many couples who have a great time together but do not spend any time apart which can often lead to a relationship that is only physical. A relationship should be intellectual, spiritual, physical, etc. When it comes to couples who spend all their time together it makes you wonder would they be able to still get along if they were apart? When you are always with them it can be hard to tell. When in a long distance relationship you have to be able to have a conversation with one another and form your relationship based on other things. Who knows, it may even add more substance to your relationship, and you may learn more about each other over the phone or through letters that you probably would not have discovered if you were living together.

Learn to appreciate one another

Another element that comes from being in a long distance relationship is that you get to really think about all the things you love about that person; things you probably would not have noticed otherwise. A good example of this is a song by Ne-Yo which I love called “Part of the List.” A few lyrics are:

“Style of your hair, Shape of your eyes and your nose
The way you stare as if you see right through to my soul.
It’s your left hip and the way it’s not quite big as your right
The way you stand in the mirror before we go out at night
Our quiet time, your beautiful mind

They’re all part of the list
things that I miss
things like your funny little laugh or the way you smile or the way we kiss
what I notice is this
I come up with
Something new every single time that I sit and reminisce”

This song is a perfect example of the things you notice and even miss when that person is away; things that you may have even taken for granted before if you saw them everyday. Once you think of these things it makes you want to promise yourself to appreciate them when they do return and never take them for granted again.

A long distance relationship is no walk in the park, but a true test of character. If you feel like you could not do it, or that the person you are with is not worth the wait than maybe that person is probably not the one for you. Call me a romantic, but I believe that love really has no boundaries or limits. If distance for a while is a small price to pay for complete happiness then I’ll take it in a heartbeat. Long distance relationships are not the end of the world, but rather a small bump in the road.
