The holiday season is in full blast now, and we find ourselves only a week until Christmas. Being part of a relatively large family, I am used to being around a ton of people, going from house to house, giving and receiving gifts. This year, however, my family and I are a little further in distance than is feasible for my mom, younger sister, and I to travel this year. We have decided to stay home this holiday season, but who says that we can’t enjoy our own company? So here are six of Miss Millennia’s favorite things to do that keep our holiday season low-key.

Low-Key Way #1: Decorate!

It is a common misconception that just because you aren’t celebrating with a ton of people during the holiday season, there is no need to deck the halls. But just because there aren’t throngs of friends and family spilling in and out of your doors doesn’t mean that this isn’t Christmas time! So pull out all of your favorite decorations and enjoy it. ‘Tis the season!

Low-Key Way #2: Rent A Few Holiday Movies

Elf movie will ferrell

Once Thanksgiving dinner is all cleaned up, my family always seems to gravitate towards the movie Elf with Will Ferrell. This awesome movie always ushers in the Christmas season with loads of laughs that will get you excited for the holidays.

My family and I probably watch this movie at least once a week throughout the holiday season. Not up for a comedy? Well, a few other great movies to consider are The Holiday (for those that are really romantic) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (for your inner child).

Low-Key Way #3: Send Cards & Gifts Early

I like to send my Christmas cards and presents out during the first two weeks of December in order to skip any last minute, lost package, hysteria. Check these things off your to-do list early and while everyone is running around panicked, you will be as calm as a cucumber.

Low-Key Way #4: Have A Bottle Of Wine

I love Gloria Ferrer wine. It goes well with large, fancy parties and small, fun get-together’s, which is why it is on this list. I have already tried two different wines of theirs, the first was a 2012 Blanc de Blancs and the second was a 2013 Chardonnay (this one was my favorite). It was a bit sweet, which I really loved, and it was quite refreshing. Both wines go well with yummy treats like goat cheese with crackers or a simple mandarin salad, perfect for a small gathering.

No wonder why their wines have earned over 400 gold medals and 50, 90+ scores in the last 5 years, which is pretty amazing. The people down at the Gloria Ferrer Vineyards like to say that their wines are the bottled expressions of the vines, hillsides, fog, wind and sky of Carneros, which I can completely agree with. If you haven’t bought a bottle yet, I highly suggest that you do ASAP.

Low-Key Way #5: Make A New Holiday Tradition

Making a new holiday tradition is easier than it seems. Try baking gingerbread cookies, search for the best Christmas display in your town, or play in the snow. Or if you’d like to do something a little less “traditionally Christmas-y,” try going for a holiday 5k or maybe paintball dressed in holiday gear. If you are on your own, try putting together a giant puzzle! Honestly, the limit is your very own imagination. Go out there and have fun with it!

 Low-Key Way #6: Don’t Make A Huge Dinner

Why make a big nuisance with cooking a huge Christmas dinner when you aren’t expecting anyone to come and eat it? Instead of the whole, overdone sit-down dinner, try going out to eat at your favorite sushi place or even order in. There is no point in making another giant dinner when you’re still working on your Thanksgiving leftovers.

Many people believe that the holidays are supposed to be full of family and friends, which it can be. But sometimes, you would like to just enjoy the holidays with one or two important people in your life, or even just by yourself. I hope this list comes in handy for those who would like to have a small Christmas. Tell me what you think of my list…what would you add to it? Cheers!
