You can tell a lot about someone by looking at their Facebook profile. You can find out who they call friends, what movies they like to watch, and what photos they took last weekend. But I bet you didn’t know that there was a way to analyze your Facebook page and your friends to learn more about your personality with a free app.
I tried the app called YouAreWhatYouLike.com and it was pretty cool to see. Not only was I able to see how neurotic, competitive, and liberal-minded I was, but I was also able to see which of my Facebook friends were my personality twins and who is the opposite. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the results.
You start by going to http://youarewhatyoulike.com/. Login with your Facebook page and wait for it to load. It’s pretty easy. The quiz breaks down your personality based on the following criteria:
- Your Openness
- Your Conscientiousness
- Your Extraversion
- Your Agreeableness
- Your Neuroticism
Each section gives you a percentage based on which side you fall on in a certain category. For example, the Openness section tells you if you are more Liberal and Artistic or Conservative and Traditional. The section below it tells you which of your friends fit on which side of the spectrum as well.
How do they do it?
The app’s creators know that people of different personalities like different things. For instance, people who like deviantART.com are (on average) liberal, while those who like NASCAR tend to be traditional. Thanks to You Are What You Like, we can identify the average personality profile of someone who likes any of the hundreds of thousands of online objects stored in the Facebook database.
First, they record your likes. Then, they find the typical personality of the people who like each of the things that you like. Based on that finding, the tool estimates your profile by adding up the profiles of your likes. If most of the things you like are liked by liberal people (e.g. Quentin Tarantino), it is quite likely that you are also liberal.
