Traveling is one of the most important and beneficial things you could do with your life. I am not just talking about traveling abroad either (although that is great if you have the opportunity), I am referring to packing a bag and go somewhere that you have never been. Traveling can show you more things about the world than any person, story or book ever could. Being a millennial with so few responsibilities yet in our lives, this is the best time to do it. Traveling is a timeless act that you can do for the rest of your life until you are 90 even. So here are a few reasons on why you should satisfy your wanderlust and travel the world.
Learn more about yourself
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page” -St. Augustine
When traveling, you learn so much about yourself. I learned that I am not very patient, but when it comes to something beautiful or new and exciting, I’ll take the time to see it or experience it. Not all trips are merely for the destination, but rather an adventure getting there can make the whole experience. I learned more about myself and grew more as a person when I did a whale watching internship in Massachusetts than when I spent three months in London. That’s why it doesn’t necessarily matter where you’re traveling to, as long as you get away and enter a new atmosphere. Times like this are when you get to think truly about who you are and what your values may be. You’re away from home and responsibilities and can work on getting to know you. Traveling can create confidence, curiosity, and strength that you thought you may never have.
“A [wo]man travels the world over in search of h[er] needs and returns home to find it” – George A Moore
Traveling can also be a time for healing. Sometimes you need to escape “you” in order to recover and heal “you.” You must immerse yourself in a new environment and experience to shake things up and re-achieve equilibrium. It is through the use of other cultures that you can come to love yourself again or move past bad experiences.

Learn about the world
“Traveling — it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller” -Ibn Battuta
Not only do you travel to learn about yourself, but also to learn about the world. Of course, one can travel the world through reading and their imagination but how amazing it is to actually see so many places in person. It is fascinating to see places that were once in movies and in poems. Not only that, but it is beautiful to travel off the beaten path and make a hidden discovery that is different from the touristy spots. Being able to dive in and learn about different cultures is an opportunity everyone should utilize. This could mean learning more about the German culture in Stuttgart, Germany or visiting the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Just take the chance to learn about different cultures through the sights and stories of different places.
Meet amazing people
“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls” -Anais Nin
The people you can meet while traveling is impressive. I have made some long-lasting friends from all around the world and am thankful for the opportunities I’ve had to meet them. You can truly learn about a new place or a new culture through the people that live there. They know the most about a place because they have lived it and experienced it. I honestly suggest when traveling, try to meet someone that has lived there for a long time or was born there because I can guarantee they will show you things and places that surpass the tourist guide book. Meeting people while traveling can also be a great networking chance. If you ever plan on going back there again or know this person has a specialty in that will benefit your future, you need to keep them in mind.
Throughout my travels, I have met captains, whale experts, Senate chair secretaries, people related to very famous entertainers, directors of large non-profits, and much more. It is nice to know that if ever I have a problem in a certain area or am interested in any of these fields, I have people that I can call on to guide me in the right direction. However, aside from the great networking openings, it is wonderful to have met these people and have their ever ending knowledge carry on with me forever. Something I suggest in one of my other articles (The Life of a Millennial on the Move) is keeping an adult yearbook that you carry with you throughout life to have other influential people write in. They can write words of wisdom or valuable lessons that they feel are beneficial to your life.
Now is the best time to do it
“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us” -Anonymous
Traveling is timeless but being able to travel now in your 20’s and 30’s is the best time because there is a little bit more wiggle room to do so. You can travel while you’re in college or right when you graduate. Just do it before you get settled down with a job that does not allow you much time to take off and travel. Your 20’s and 30’s are an excellent time to travel as well because there is less of a chance that you have any responsibilities that may keep you back like children or a partner. Not everyone gets lucky and ends up with a career and life that allows them to travel on the whim so take these ventures now to get out there and explore.
