It is almost time to celebrate Mother’s Day, and I have absolutely NO idea what I am going to get my mom this year. There is always the generic flowers or breakfast in bed, but I want to step it up this year. Yes, I know that my mom will love whatever I get her, and it only matters that I put some thought behind a gift. Blah, blah, blah. This year, I am going to give her something personal — an experience! But I am not sure which one to go with.

In this article, I have thought of a few really cool ways to celebrate Mother’s Day that goes beyond a handmade coffee mug because my mom deserves the world, but I can’t afford that this year. Check out all of my out-of-the-box ideas and tell me what you think of them in the comments!

Idea #1: Have A Board Games Competition

My family has always been obsessed with board games. Everyone loves them! The thrill of competition and being able to win your well to a well-earned beatdown (or maybe you throw a game or two) is fun! Be it one-on-one or with the added challenge of a few friends or siblings, it’s a fine chance to bond over a shared love (or in many cases, a common enemy) and have something to think back on in a good light in the future. Spend some time playing popular choices: Clue, Sorry, or maybe even Monopoly. If the last is included, this competition is guaranteed to last the whole holiday.

Note: I’m not unaware of the potentially caustic outcomes of board games. This is serious territory and depending on the mood and personalities of all players involved; things can get pretty extreme. Being extreme can be fun! Just ensure you have some solid rules in place beforehand…

Idea #2: Celebrate Mother’s Day At The Botanical Gardens

Why not put a new twist on an old classic? Instead of giving her a bouquet of flowers and calling it a day, take her out and celebrate Mother’s Day where the flowers are in full bloom. My family has always loved The Botanical Gardens because it is where nature is allowed to flourish.

One of the best ways to relax is by surrounding yourself with nature and just taking it easy: something I am sure all of our moms would really appreciate. If you are lucky, your Botanical Gardens may have an area for lunch! Yum!

 Idea #3: Mud Bath, Anyone?

Treating yourself is quite common, but no one says you can’t treat someone else at the same time. Being pampered is always great for the nerves and hey — if there’s any bad blood between the two of you, what better time to set a clean slate and clear the air than this? Therapeutic aromas would definitely help on that count.

Bad blood or not, your mother deserves a break, and there’s no doubt she’d appreciate a trip to a masseuse. If this doesn’t sell it, let me speak from personal experience. My mother loves a good spa day. Be it partial pampering with a manicure or pedicure of someone rubbing her back or her weekly trips to get a message, a free trip is something my own mother would absolutely adore. And, if my hunch is correct, so would yours.

Idea #4: Get Her Wine–She’s Earned It

Throughout the years, I am sure that you put your mom through the ringer while growing up back in the day. I know that I did (and still do!). So why not give her the thing that helps us wind down from our own days? Of course, I am talking about a good ol’ glass of my favorite Butter Chardonnay.

I already know what you are thinking; Butter Chardonnay? Well, it definitely lives up to its name. The reason why the founders of this wine chose Butter as its name is because it is a rich and creamy, easy-to-love California Chardonnay. Your mom is sure to forgive your past sins after sharing a few yummy sips with you on Mother’s Day.

If you would like to try out this deliciously fruity and smooth wine, check them out on their web page here and follow them on their social pages that I listed below!

Idea #5: Trash Television All Day, No Judgments

My mom and I love, love, love to watch reality shows. Bad Girls Club, The Real Housewives, Dance Moms — you name it, we watch it. We normally catch a ton of heat for constantly having the tv blaring with hilarious arguments and fights. So giving her an entire day to sit back and relax and watch the comedy ensue on her tv without any judgments is pretty close to having a perfect day!

No matter what you decide to do with your mom to celebrate Mother’s Day this year, I am sure that no matter what you choose, she will love it. She always has…. (even ever since you were a kid bringing her a burnt breakfast in bed!) So, any of these ideas are all definitely a step up in the Mother’s Day game.

What are you planning for your mom this year? Throw out your favorite ideas in the comments below.
