This time last year I was unpacking my suitcases after my 10-month stay in Brazil. I often think back to last year and I yearn for all the people I fell in love with. I had a few romantic relationships while I was there, but I don’t include those lovely Brazilian boys in the category of people I “love.” I truly loved my host parents and I was only able to tell them that the last day I was with them.
My host mother and father drove me to the airport in San Paulo and we arrived early enough to eat lunch together before I had to go through customs. My good friend Justin from South Africa came along to see me off as well. We went to a Pizza Hut in the airport and sat down to eat in the crowded café style dining area. Halfway through the meal I began to express my feelings. I told them that a few times before I had a strong urge to tell them this, but I didn’t want to make them uncomfortable and that I had to tell them now. “Eu amo vocês,” I said. My host father began to cry and they both told me that they loved me too.
