At Miss Millennia Magazine, we celebrate ambitious women who are focused on making a difference in the world and empowered to live their dreams. Aligned with our political theme this month, we'd like to spotlight a woman whose passion for the American dream has driven her political involvement.
Introducing Mia Love, currently the Mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah and running for Congress. She has filed to run for Utah’s newly formed 4th Congressional District against six-term incumbent Democratic Representative Jim Matheson. It's possible history will be made this November. If Mia Love wins this election, she would be the first-ever black Republican woman to win a seat in the U.S. Congress.
Mia Love was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of hard working Haitian immigrants. Her parents’ journey to the U.S., arriving with only $10 in their pockets, shaped Ms. Love's work ethic and and expectation. “The America I grew up knowing was centered in self-reliance and filled with the possibilities of living the American dream,” she recounted at the Republican National Convention.
Ms. Love graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in fine arts. She served two terms on the city council of Saratoga Springs, one of Utah’s fastest growing cities. As City Councilwoman and eventually Mayor, Mia led the city through a period of 1700% population growth in a decade and also through the past years of recession.
An avid runner, this 36-year old mother of three has been blazing a trail the whole way. In 2010, she was the first black woman elected as mayor of a Utah city. “…hopefully it's what I stand for that matters,” Love says “I was elected as mayor with 60 percent of the vote, and it wasn't because I'm black and I'm female.”
Her Republican Party nomination was a big surprise, but her demonstrated leadership on conservative principles and commitment to fiscal discipline, limited government, and personal responsibility has made her a strong opponent. “I believe our country is in big trouble,” said Love, “If I can make a difference, not only should I do it, it's my obligation as a parent and an American.” She's definitely a woman to watch! www.love4utah.com
