My second day in California did not go as planned. I was supposed to go sightseeing with my uncle and take some photos, but instead I got sick. My vision got slightly blurry, my head ached, and my jaw was stiff. The sensation was familiar and I knew it was going to get worse. I was about to leave with my uncle when I decided to tell my aunt I wasn’t feeling well. She said, “Well better stay here then.” Then she said something wise and comforting as she usually does, and it made me feel better about being a wimp.
I went into the living room, the place where I am now, a comforting location with a huge bay window that has a great
mountain view. I laid down and accepted all the comforting attention of my lovely aunt who propped my feet on pillows, covered me with a blanket, made me a rice sock and gave me a sleep mask. She started lunch, ravioli in a garlic sauce.
Once the smells came into the living room nausea kicked in full gear. My aunt came back and had me step outside into the fresh air. I came back in and was hit with the wall of garlic smell. My aunt directed me to the downstairs level of the house and as I was stepping down the spiral staircase, I knew what was coming. I walked quickly into the bedroom straight ahead and into its bathroom and became familiar with my breakfast in a whole new way.
The next 10 hours went on between bed and bath, with cold and hot sweats, thermometers, aspirin, and weak attempts at hydration.
I am happy to say that food poisoning symptoms only lasted one day. The following day I was well enough to eat Indian food 🙂
