Meet Ariel Pakizer, Author of Iron and Glass
Lights glare in her eyes; she tries blinking them away. Her foot swings around her—screech! Her world spins. A warm liquid touches her skin. The moan of a siren, the smell of wood, the beat of a heart, a cold body beneath soft fingertips—cold; bodies are supposed to be warm.
Ballerina Calissa Delano Lavalle lost her mother in a car accident, and now she struggles to dance. Her coach recommends Calissa take a break, but, without dancing, nothing can distract Calissa from her mother’s absence and the distance her father’s placed between them. Calissa tries pulling the unraveling threads of her life together, but even her friends slip away. Weighted with the past, she cannot move forward, until something new invades. Animals have started following Calissa. Her life takes a dangerous turn where the supernatural becomes real. Two beautiful and undoubtedly lethal boys will change Calissa’s life, tangling her past and future, endangering her friends and family, and forcing Calissa to search inside herself and discover what it means to be human.
Well, that has to be one of thee hardest questions to answer. How can I tell someone who I am when I’m not sure myself? I can give you facts, which might color the canvas that is “me”, but they’re just a surface image. The person behind the picture, well, I’m still trying to figure her out. But, I’ll paint “me” using facts anyways.
Majoring in English, I’ve attended three colleges but maintained a 4.0 GPA (thus far). I have Irish and Native American blood with some Slovak thrown in. I’m a Christian and a Michigander at heart. I’ve got a great family and have co-authored some books with my sister. A little dramatic and chronically sarcastic, I’m not too different from everyone else.
Writing novels since I was nine, I’ve been obsessed with characters for as long as I can remember. J.R.R. Tolkien breathed a love of fantasy and all things mythical into me. A fan of history, mythology, the unexplained, and music, I’m a dork who freaks out and gets far too emotionally attached to characters in TV shows and books. I pour my soul into every story I’ve written and am excited to share Iron & Glass. I hope others enjoy it as much as I do. I plan on continuing my career as an author, but even if no one wants to read what I write, I’ll keep writing anyways. I don’t really have a choice.
Stories come from all places. Sometimes they drop from the sky and hit you like brick. Other times they come in pieces. Iron & Glass started with Calissa, and she’s a private person. She told me her story a little at time. Once she finally opened up, the world fell into place. It wasn’t a “hit by lightening” moment, more like putting a puzzle together without the box. You finish, step back, and finally see the whole thing, and it’s kind of beautiful. And yeah, I’ve had ide as bloom in my head, thinking about dinner one moment and a world living in my mind the next; characters have walked into my thoughts and chattered away until I relented and penned their story. I’ve even had scenes come to me in dreams, reliving them night after night until I write it down.
Calissa came in pieces, tiptoeing around my head until she finally sat down and guided me through this story: a sad ballerina with a past I didn’t know, dangerous creatures whose faces I couldn’t distinguish, and her friends with endings I didn’t want but couldn’t change. Every bit I learned pulled me further into Calissa’s world, and while this story threw me for a loop, headed one way then jerked into another, it resulted in Calissa’s story exactly how it happened and remains the more truthful account of it that I can write.

“This is a beautiful and touching fantasy. I loved it. I was deeply moved by it and held captive from start to finish. The story line is perfect, with humans and fairies, good and evil. It is one of the best fantasy stories I have ever read. The characters are amazing and so real. It is as if I actually know them. The bonds they formed are inspiring and reminded me how precious life its and even more so, how precious those in our lives are. The attention to details is outstanding and put the reader right in the center of everything. I felt as though I was really there, feeling every emotion, every pain, every heart beat. It is so gripping, with so much action and unexpected twists and turns. I want more of this story. I need to know what happens next. This author is brilliant with a beautiful heart and a charming imagination. I would love to see more of her work. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a most enchanting tale.”
“YA supernatural books are huge right now. Iron and Glass is your typical story of a female heroine who discovers she’s “unique” while catching the attention and affection of a “young man” who really isn’t all that human. Sound familiar? Mysterious men, crazed animals, and a love of beauty takes you on a wild ride–but this one has a twist. We’re not talking vampires and werewolves here. Calissa’s life seems to be spiraling out of control, she’s lost so much and is on the verge of a mental breakdown. Uncovering the truth about herself and the mystery of the mysterious new young men in her life may be too much for her to handle. In the end, is brotherly love stronger than the affection of a young beautiful ballerina? This is a great take on YA supernatural love stories that will surprise you!”
“Awesome read! To be frank, I was a little hesitant about reading this book. Curiously, I turned the first two pages then instantaneously the pages were turning themselves as this interesting book had me totally absorbed. Surely this captivating story line grabbed my attention and maintained it to the very end. Indeed this mind gripping tale records thought provoking events of the life of Calissa. Surprisingly, the characters and unique imageries were well-crafted. Now that’s an A plus! From beginning to end this book is well written and organized. The escalating story line positioned various twists and turns to leave you breathless. Truly I had an awesome read! Highly recommend.”
