One thing I love about blogging is that I have a record of many chapters in my life. While we can recall and retell stories over time, the smallest details can be left out, confused or even forgotten about altogether. Because of this, I love documenting my stories on M3, our weekly newsletter and in my journal.

This is even more so the case when it comes to the important stuff that happens to you. One of those events that I will forever cherish is my engagement story. When I first got engaged last year, all my friends and family swarmed around me so I could tell the story of how Chris decided to propose. And let’s just say I got used to telling it A LOT. But now that some time has passed and we are preparing for our upcoming nuptials and the story of our engagement has become old news.

This is even more reason why I think it’s important to write down my engagement story because it is like preserving it for the perfect moment that it was. I’d like to recall my story with you!

My Story

July 4th, 2016 started out like any typical Independence Day. Chris and I usually grilled with friends and watched fireworks. But this time around, Chris suggested us just hanging out just the two of us. I’m always for mixing things up so I said yes! He suggested we get dinner at our favorite restaurant, Myron’s, and see some fireworks after at the race track down the street. I loved the idea of the simplicity.

We made jokes like we typically do at dinner and filled up on a good meal.

After dinner we headed over to the race track and found a good spot to lie our blanket down on the ground to watch the fireworks. It was still pretty bright out so we took pics together and walked around the track a bit. It was a good time.

I did not really have a clue what Chris was preparing to do. I did notice that he was a little more anxious than usual while we were out. I assumed it was because he had work the next day and it was getting late. I asked if he was okay and if we wanted to go home. He said, “No, I’m fine.” I looked at him strangely since he was not only being anxious but also a little fidgety. He kept moving around, looking for his phone, looking around.

He seemed to relax a little once the fireworks started.

The Proposal

We were both sitting on the blanket watching the fireworks. I saw Chris fidgeting around from the corner of my eye. I assumed he was moving around so much replying to texts for work and just enjoyed my time looking at the fireworks. I was pointing at my favorites and calling out the best ones. Finally, Chris stopped fidgeting and I remembering thinking to myself, finally maybe he will finally pay attention to these with me.

He said, “Um Jasmine…..”

I replied, “Yes,” still looking up at the sky. When I did not respond I looked over at him sitting on the blanket with me. In his hand he was holding a ring in between his thumb and ring finger. I saw the ring and was shocked.

I looked at his face and he asked me quietly, “Will You Marry Me?”

I looked at him, then the ring, then him, then the ring, and I just started bawling. I mean flat out ugly crying; I was so choked up I could not even utter the word “yes.” I just shook my head up and down and muttered a barely verbal “yes.”

Us just moments after I said yes

I was so surprised and happy and just overwhelmed with happiness. Honestly, recalling this story is bringing a tear to my eye. It had to be one of the happiest moments of my life. The person I like so much in my life wants to spend the rest of their life with me. What else could anyone ask for?

My Ring

Chris put the ring on my finger and I could not stop looking at it. I’d cry, then try to stop crying, then look at the ring again, then I’d start all over. I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I told Chris I was ready to go home. I am not a crier, ya’ll! And I’m most definitely not a public space crier.

I was in complete disbelief that Chris could keep this a secret from me when we live in the same house. He got me a beautiful gold ring which is special since he knows I barely wear any silver. And I just wanted to cherish that ring forever just like I will cherish this story.
