You’d be surprised what your body can do. After watching numerous friends train and run a marathon in the past few weeks, it made me a little more confident that this is something I could do, too! Running a marathon is definitely one of my long term goals. Once accomplished, I will be completely astonished at what my body went through!
So, do you know what your body can do?! Have you ever gone beyond your fitness comfort zone?! Do you try full press ups just to see if you can?!
As a sprinter in my younger days, I’ve never been fond of running more than 100 meters. Eventually, I started to clock up a little distance indoors on the treadmill before I decided to take it outdoors and train for a 5k run. After a few 5k runs, I wondered if I could go further, maybe train for a 10k run?! So I signed up (with a friend, of course) and off we went on our journey to conquer 10k (that’s 10,000 meters!).
We successfully completed our first ever 10k run and post event I hadn’t run in a while. I needed another goal, something to focus my energy on! Last minute (3 weeks to be exact) I got offered a place in a half marathon…that’s two times 10k and then a little bit more. I took up the challenge since I felt I had a decent base level of fitness, even if it wasn't running. I decided to pick one pace and stick to it from start to finish. If I ran every kilometer around the 6 1/2 minute mark, I would come in under 2.5hrs for my first every half marathon — the first time I would ever run past the 10km mark!
Finishing that run is still one of my biggest achievements to date. I hung the medal with pride and it encouraged me to achieve more. In the year after, I decided to focus on getting a better time at 10k and managed to cut more than 10 minutes off my best time (bringing it in under an hour)! This year, I’m still working on my 10k Personal Best but have also taken up the challenge of another half marathon in June. So, I have time to train to make my goal of beating my original time!
I’m pushing my body beyond expectations. To live a happy, healthy life…longer!
