Often times, it’s easy to be sucked into visiting big tourist beaches. They’re well advertised, everyone talks about going there, and they usually have good deals because of the numerous lodgings available. I too fell into this trap about two years ago in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While the beach was beautiful, and most places we visited very hospitable, I found the sheer volume of people vacationing there unnerving. It seems to me, tourist areas like this lack a certain charm. Wouldn’t it be nice to visit someplace everyone else hasn’t already seen? As a millennial in transition from college into a career or parenthood, life is loud, and at times overwhelming. Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy a few beautiful beaches without the buzz of all the chaos in the world? When you contemplate digging your toes into the sand again, think about these secret beach gems.
Boca Grande, Florida
This quiet and whimsical beach town is located on a small, tropical island called Gasparilla, right off the Gulf coast. The area has no large chain restaurants and is known for one of its quirky street names: Damficare. The Island is surrounded by the beautiful waters of the Charlotte Harbor. Boca Gande is famous for its phenomenal fishing allure and “Boca nuts,” hand-painted coconuts by a Boca Grande artist. There are many noticeable wildlife animals as well, such as gopher tortoises, manatees, and herons. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, a little outside of the average beach vacation, this place is for you.
Zmudowski State Beach, Monterey County, California
This is another great fishing area which boasts an array of fish, from perch to lingcod, to rock head. You will also find opportunities here for horseback riding and bird watching. This beach has a ramp-style dune surrounding the entrance which makes visiting the beach a little harder than others. However, this keeps the beach relatively secluded which allows you quiet time on the beach. There are a few inns located in close proximity to the beach. Imagine a busy day exploring Monterey, followed by a relaxing stroll along this beautiful, secluded beach. This is relaxation at its finest!
Kauapea Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
This beach is often referred to as a “secret beach” because it is located off the beaten path. This beach offers breathtaking views and peaceful privacy. Many people busy themselves here with picnicking, swimming, snorkeling and seashell hunting. It is like an actual private paradise for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist beaches. A quarter mile hike down the beach leads to a beautiful 15-foot waterfall which plummets into the lively Pacific Ocean. What’s not to love?
Little St. Simmons Island, Georgia
This is an all-inclusive private island. There is never occupancy over 32 guests at a time. While this trip may require you to spend a pretty penny, it will ensure your privacy and entertainment. The island has so much to do, you could get lost in your time there. Hike down miles of forested trails, canoe down a tidal creek, swim and gawk at birds feeding and alligators nesting across a large pond. The island also offers some of the most appetizing food known to tourists. Eat the claims of your dreams!
Whether you’re trying to stay economical or you like the sound of a luxury resort, there is a beautiful, quiet beach awaiting your presence! Let this list help you start planning your beach vacation today!
