Pattie Simone is founder and visionary of WomenCentric, LLC, “a global directory of women professionals, including
experts, speakers, consultants, artists, activists and authors.” WomenCentric has become a large platform for women entrepreneurs and a supportive community for those wanting to network, seeking job opportunities or get motivation from inspirational stories. Miss Millennia conducted an exclusive interview with Pattie to learn more about her and explore her journey to WomenCentric.
December of 1977, Pattie graduated from State University, College of Oneonta a semester early with her bachelor's degree in English, but no longer having a desire to teach. After stints in publishing, advertising and textiles, Pattie began dreaming of different possibilities. She also wanted to be with her family more, so by 1988 she started her first business, a retail store she opened with her sister-in-law in Ramsey, N.J., called “The Home Place.” For seven years, together they learned a lot about buying, hiring, merchandising, marketing and advertising, but they weren’t able to support their dream, so the business closed down after seven years. After closing of her first business, Pattie worked for several different companies as Director of Sales and Marketing – and began producing features as a reporter for a local newspaper. She expanded into various print and online outlets, developing her editorial writing skills and even influencing her marketing copywriting.
Her experience in writing taught her so much, but she was just beginning a new, exciting journey. After attending several different networking events in 2004, the vision for WomenCentric sparked. Sitting in a Westchester diner, she met with four other women, sharing her new idea about joining together under a platform they could all leverage. Everyone came on board and she took the leadership role, paying for the website and the legal filings, including a trademark. WomenCentric saw many ups and downs and twists and turns. In 2009, Pattie revamped it into a hybrid of a speakers bureau and a PR agency, but realized this business model did not work.
By January of 2011, WomenCentric was reborn as a female-focused online connections directory and has since attracted professionals from all across the US, as well as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Bulgaria, the Philippines and the Cayman Islands. Pattie hopes to grow this new model into a leading tech platform for female professionals & experts, providing connections, education and app development, so she is now pursuing angel and venture capital funding. The obstacles and challenges that arose did not stop Pattie from constantly re-working her business model into one that worked and flourished. Through Pattie’s diligence and steadfastness she developed a vehicle that is helping to amplify the voice and opportunities for women worldwide.
