Definitely a great value
I'm very impressed with the quality of these colored pencils. The colors are bright and very pigmented.The first page I did swatches of just the Caliart colored pencils and the metallic pencils. They did not blend too well & seemed a little splotchy. (This was on the paper in the notebook from the kit.) I then switched to a different notebook that has slightly smoother paper & they performed better. For comparison, I tested a couple of Prismacolors & Arteza brand pencils at the bottom of this page, in similar colors. Really, there's no difference that I could tell except for the blending. I'm able to burnish easier w/ Prisma & Arteza without using a blender pencil but once I used a colorless blender (Prismacolor brand) on these Caliart pencils, it definitely smoothed out the color to an acceptable level. A little more effort and practice & I'm sure it will look great.The metallic colors were not sparkly in any way, but I'm not sure I've seen any that are. (I have Silver, Gold & Bronze in Arteza brand & they don't sparkle either.) The metallic colors are still very nice though and will come in handy, as they are all mid-tones compared to the regular colored pencils.Last I tested a few watercolor pencils, the water brush & the dual tipped marker - see pic. The colored pencils were even creamier then the regular pencils and would be good to use for coloring & blending without water. But once water is added, it blurred out all the lines for a nice, smooth wash of color. The marker ink flows really well & is opaque.The only snafu I had w/ this set was the button on the exacto knife was broken inside the case. It was easy enough to snap back together but it feels cheaply made. (This is the only thing in the kit that did seem cheap!) So I didn't dock any stars for that since it wasn't actually broken beyond repair - plus, I have no idea what I would need this for while doing artwork anyway!!I will just say again, I'm very impressed with this kit. Yes, you can buy it for kids or young teens just starting out but it is also a really nice set for someone that already has the fancier pens/pencils as everything you need is all tucked neatly into this to-go case and probably has a few items in it that you don't already have!
