I’ve had this power bank since 2015
I was considering upgrading my Anker power bank to something newer or nicer but this thing has kept working since then! Sure it takes a while to charge the actual power bank and it still uses micro-usb but it works!

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2017
As a father with 4 children and a family that likes to travel, having available power is a must. Prior to a few years ago, this meant carrying wall chargers and cables, and hopefully finding tables by outlets when on an urban vacation, or just dealing if away from civilization. Thankfully the ready availability of back-up batteries with USB outputs have made this a thing of the past. Now the challenge is finding one that's reliable and has capacity to keep up with today's high demand devices. Luckily there's Anker.

I first picked up the 20100 about 2 years ago, so it's not the newest product on the market, but it is one of the most affordable and reliable. It's also been revised several times as new technology is available, so it will keep up with todays devices. There's even a USB-C version now, though that's a review for another time.

First impressions, this is solid. Out of the box it has a nice heft and is well put together. No loose rattle or clicks. Button is smooth and responsive. Seams clean/tight and has a durable feel to the entire unit. Looks and feels well made. It's also held up well. In the two years since I purchased it, it's been annexed by teenage son. It's survived several drops, and daily being thrown in his backpack. It's not marketed as "rugged" but it has held up excellently to daily use/abuse. It is a little larger than most battery packs, but this is to be expected at a capacity of 20,100 mAh. Lithium cells can only get so small, but the unit is still very compact consider it barely larger than the six 18650 cells that power it. It won't fit in your pocket, but easily slips in a purse or backpack.

Performance has been excellent. Capacity is listed at 20,100 mAh but you need to keep in mind there is a conversion you need to do prior to matching to your phone capacity. For example, Anker states it will charge the iPhone 6s a total of 7.3x. iPhone 6s battery is 1715mah. 1715x7.3 = 12,520. Well below 20,100 mAh. But you are converting from a 3.7volt cell in the backup battery to 5V USB output. Then your phone is converting the 5V coming in typically back down to 4.2V. With these conversions you will have losses due to inefficiency, which is why your battery and phone heat up with use.

So, where does the 20100 fall? I hooked my unit up to a dummy load running 5v at 2A, using a smart multimeter, I consistently measured capacity at 13,640 mAh. Converting to watt hours (makes for easier comparison) = 68.2 Watt hours. Anker lists the battery pack at 74.37 Watt hours. 68.2/74.37 = 92% available capacity. Accounting for losses due to electric resistance and conversion, this is excellent efficiency. It also accounts for why the battery doesn't really heat up with use.

So real world use? iPhone 6 can recharge about 7.5 times. iPhone 7 about 7 times. When I tested with my iphone 7 I can typically get 6.8 charges before the battery pack is completely drained. So the advertised capacity is essentially dead on.

Charging, as other reviewers have noted, takes awhile. With a 2A charger this takes about 9-10 hours if the unit is completely dead. Since most people are not going to drain the pack daily, plug in at bedtime and it's ready in the morning. If you're using your phone charger it will take longer, but honestly if you're investing in this battery pack, do yourself a favor and pick up a quality wall charger (Anker sells several versions of those also :) ) When I used this on our last trip to Disney, it charged on average 3-4 phones/day and still had 2 leds lit. Plugged it in at night and it was full and ready to go by morning. Another very important feature is the dual USB outputs. Being able to charge 2 phones and stop siblings from fighting over the charger is priceless.

In all, this is a phenomenal battery pack and a steal at the current price. Catch it during a sale or with a discount coupon and it's a no brainer.

If you need a high capacity battery and don't need to worry about it fitting in a pocket, you can't go wrong with the Anker 20100.

I purchased this with my own money, did not receive any discount or incentives and was not asked by the company to write this review.

I've had this charger for about 4 months now. I'm not using it every day but would say 4 to 5 days a week it gets pulled out. Usually when I'm traveling away from the office for the day. I do really like the capacity. I can charge my s7 a good 4 times before the pack is empty. Number of times it charges my phone really does vary based on the initial charge the phone started with say 30% vs 2% and my usage during the charging period. Over all I'm happy with it at this point but a do have a disappointment. My problem with my pack at this point is the lifespan it looks like this product may have. I will generally just plug it into my computer to recharge the pack. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that the charger has taken a lot longer to charge my phone than before. So I did a few more tests and it appears the unit no longer fast charges my phone. It still does a slow charge but since I upgraded phones a few rounds back and moved to phones that fast charge a old "slow" charge is really slow. Almost to the point that it is no longer worth using this charger unless as a last resort. So yes it can still charge the phone but no longer does a fast charge. I've even taken my phone cable that plugs into my AC adapter and fast charges my phone and used that cord on the power pack to make sure it wasn't the cord but same cord iin the AC wall adapter fast charges but in the power pack slow charges.

    Pros:
-Worked well for the first 3 1/2 months.
-Good number of recharges from the unit.
-Like the case it comes with.
-lights on the side showing capacity left.

    Cons:
    -No longer fast charges

So If you are looking for a decent phone battery pack this does a good job and seems well built. Maybe I just had a defect issue in mine. But at this point as I get shopping for a new one sometime soon I'll probably be looking at a different brand hoping for a longer lasting product.

    *Update:*
So I have been in contact with Anker costumer service and can say they do have very good and helpful service. They gave me some directions to test the product to confirm it was not functioning like it should. After I did these tests they went ahead and sent a replacement charger right out to me. And instead of sending me the exact same one they sent me and updated version which works really well. I can say I'm back to charging the phone quickly on the new charger. Last time I charged my S7 it went from 3% to 100% in just over an hour and some mins. I didn't use it a ton during the charge but that is very much in the expected range for my quick charging expectations.

As I work with a lot of technology in my job I can say that things do break at times. It is hard for every product that comes off a line to work perfectly. The warranty and costumer services is far and away above what I expected to find on this product. These are the types of companies I seek to continue to buy products from at work when I find one with good costumer service. If you are debating between this product and another brand I would definitely get the Anker product if only for the costumer service even if I had to pay a little bit more.

I was looking for this model at a decent price over a year ago, this was a lot cheaper than when I was previously looking.
In as far as functionality and looks, it’s a power bank, gosh. I use it to charge a phone and GoPro, it seems to keep going for ages. It’s a little heavier than others but with a lot more capacity. It’s black, has capacity indicator lights, and comes with a small protective bag and a short charging cable.
I hope this was the least helpful review you’ve ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent portable charger when Quickcharge and travelling ultra light are not important

As an avid nature photographer, I often find myself off the grid, with no or limited access to power sources for charging my phone, camera, and other portable electronic devices. A friend of mine recommended the Anker portable charging devices, so I decided to give them a try. Here I will review the PowerCore 20100.

PACKAGING: I’m not usually one to care about how a product is packaged (as long it isn’t damaged in transit) - but I have to say, Anker has done a superb job packaging this thing. Maybe not quite at the Apple level, but not too far from it. As soon as you open the box, you get the impression this is a premium product.

BUILD QUALITY: I’m extremely impressed with the build quality of this product, especially given its very reasonable (dare I say low) price. It feels very dense and solid, while not being unreasonably heavy. At 358 g + 10 g (pouch) + 14 g (cable), this may be getting a bit heavy for hiking/backpacking trips, but is quite lightweight for just about anything else (car/plane travel, car camping, etc.). Speaking of the pouch, this is probably the best soft carrying pouch I’ve ever seen included with an electronics product. It’s made of a nice lightweight mesh, which is lined internally with a thin foam padding that gives added protection against bumps and drops. The USB A ports seem to be of really nice quality, and have a great feel to them when you insert a USB plug into them. This model has two USB ports, allowing charging of 2 devices (at up to 2.4A each) simultaneously - this is a very nice feature to save time when multiple devices need to be charged. The device has a small 4-light LED indicator that provides information on the current charge level, which is very useful for knowing how much juice is left in the battery pack. While not charging or being charged, pressing a small button on the side of the device will activate the LED indicator. The only minor complaint I have is that plugging a cable into the micro USB port is a little more resistant and finicky than I’d like.

CHARGING: When using this device to charge my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (3600 mAh battery), I get an average charging rate of about 1.3 minutes per % (so about 130 min. to fully charge the phone). This rate is similar to what I get from standard (non-fast charge) 2A wall chargers. The PowerCore has the capacity to fully charge the phone just under 4 times, which is expected given the 60-70% efficiency quoted by Anker on their website. In terms of how long it takes to recharge the PowerCore itself, it takes about 11.5 hours to go from empty to full (using a 2A USB charger). One nice feature to point out is that there is no on/off switch - when you plug in a device, it starts charging, and when you unplug it, it stops. So no need to worry about forgetting to turn the charger on or off.

    PROS:
    - Very well built, and seemingly durable
    - Reasonable weight, given the charge capacity
    - Good length micro USB cable and excellent quality carrying/storage pouch included
    - Charge level indicator
    - Charges devices at a good rate
    - Does not need to be switched on/off

    CONS:
    - Time to recharge the PowerCore 20100 is somewhat on the long side, making things a bit tricky. For example, if you wanted to charge overnight, you’d need to start it charging a couple of hours before going to bed, and leave it charging for a couple more hours after waking up - this is a bit awkward.

CONCLUSION: Overall, I’m very impressed with this product. It appears to be a high quality product that offers a great set of features. No, it doesn’t have Quickcharge capability (either for charging or for being charged), but given its low price, it offers excellent value. Unless Quickcharge is important to you, I would highly recommend this battery pack to people looking for a super convenient way to charge their electronic devices while travelling.

PICTURES: Among the attached pictures, I’ve included one of the PowerCore 20100 beside a credit card, and another of it beside the PowerCore 10000, to give a relative sense of size.

    Modelo: PowerCore 20100
    Peso: 350 gr
    Medida: 17cm x 6cm x 2.2cm

    ================================
    Pros:
    - Alta capacidad (20100 mAh).
    - Acabados de buena calidad.
    - Leds indicadores de carga.
    - PowerIQ, carga a la máxima velocidad posible en cada equipo.
    - Tamaño relativamente compacto.

    Cons:
    - No incluye cargador.
    - Tarda 8-12 horas en recargarse (2amp)
    ================================

5.0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Portable Chargers, EVER!
Reviewed in Canada on April 14, 2016
This is probably the best battery pack and I was lucky enough for Anker to send me one. Let me explain why! When you first get this portable you're presented professionally with a small box containing the power bank, micro USB and nice looking case. It's really considerate when a company such as Anker include a pamphlet that makes sure the customer is satisfied and doesn't have any problems. The power bank itself is noticeably heavy but for how much mAh it holds, it's definitely worth it. It can charge my Nexus 5 about 6 times by itself and could probably charge an iPhone 6 around the same amount of times. The charging speed on this is amazing as well. If your phone doesn't support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 then you definitely need to get this. Examples of phones would be the Nexus 5 and iPhone's. It charges extremely fast, charging my Nexus from 0-100% in about 50 minutes to an hour. That's amazing considering it doesn't support quick charge 2.0. I used ampere to measure the amount of amps travelling through the cable and it's usually around 1500mAh which is a very high speed. The portable bank itself charges in about 8 hours from being dead which may seem long until you consider, as stated before, how big the actual battery is. The material on the portable bank is a nice matte feeling black that is nice to hold in the hand. One issue I encountered with this choice of material is that it scratches easily but it does come with a carrying case that would protect it from such damage. There are 2 USB ports so you can charge 2 devices at once and it uses 4 LED's to determine how much power is left. 4 on meaning 80-full and 1 while blinking meaning dead or soon to be. If you're not satisfied with your product for any reason Anker is nice enough to include a crazy long warranty where they'll try to work at an agreement with you. Whether that's sending you another one because your's was defected our just plain out giving you a refund. Anker is highly considerate to their customers and that's one of my favourite things about them. Overall I think anyone who has a phone with a bad battery such as mine should consider this. You won't be able to carry it in your pocket but at least you'll have more power then anyone beside you!
