Being healthy can suck. I will be the first person to tell you this. When I was younger, I used to love to pretend to be Cinderella and eat oatmeal. Because in my mind, I felt like I was truly suffering, and my prince would come and rescue me from a harsh life, filled with such a plain breakfast. I mean, what other breakfast would a princess that has to sweep the floors and is constantly being bullied by her step-family eat, but plain oatmeal?
When I got a bit older, I realized the complete absurdity in this idea and decided to reward myself by dousing my oatmeal in brown sugar. I mean, I definitely deserved it. Well, the years passed, and I entered college and realized, I could no longer be eating a bowl of brown sugar with a side of oatmeal. That’s when I understood I needed to invest in healthy ways to eat oatmeal, and I’m going to share four ways here!
Yogurt adds protein and calcium to your oatmeal, while also giving the bland flavor of its tang or sweetness. But make sure to try to use low-fat or plain yogurt, because a lot of the flavored ones have a lot of hidden sugar. You can also add some milk to get that extra boost of calcium and protein.
This is my personal favorite way to spice up a tasteless breakfast, and there are so many ways to do it!
- Frozen: My friend eats her oatmeal by cooking it on the stove (she swears this is the best cooking method to make delicious oatmeal) and adding frozen blueberries, while she cooks. This melts the blueberries and colors the oatmeal blue.
- Dried: Another friend of mine likes to add dried fruit, like raisins, to her oatmeal. She also adds a pinch of salt for flavoring.
- Fresh: Nothing is more delicious to me than fresh fruit. It will also give you some sweetness, or tanginess, depending on the fruit, while being extremely natural and healthy. You can also squish up the fresh fruit and mix it into the oatmeal. Also, don’t be afraid to just add some jam to it! If you’re afraid of buying fresh fruit, because you think it will go bad, don’t forget, you can always buy dried or frozen fruit and you won’t have a time frame breathing down your neck.
Spice up your oatmeal with some awesome healthy spices, like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, or even a teaspoon of pure honey.
4. Seeds and Nuts
By texture oatmeal can be soft and repetitive. Your teeth might just be aching for some action. Why not throw in some almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, or even sunflower seeds, for some crunchy fun! Nuts are also another great source of protein.
