Tracking PixelI can’t claim to have a green thumb. Though I haven’t killed any of the plants I own (yet), I’m not an avid gardener by any means. However, I strive to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. I recycle everything I can, I think it’s important to use natural products, and I do love having plants in my room. So when I started working with Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day® campaign promoting Plant Something Day, I was so excited. This is my chance to develop my gardening skills! Before I got my hands dirty, I decided to do some research on why it’s so important to plant something. Here’s what I learned.

What is Plant Something Day?

Plant Something Day took place on May 19th. It’s a day to get together with your family, friends, and community to enact positive change. All you have to do to celebrate is make sure that you plant at least one new thing—a pot of flowers, a shrub, a tree, or anything else. Although that day has already passed, we can still celebrate because it’s a day that is so important to the health of our planet.

Why You Should Plant Something

Very simply, more plants equal a happier Earth! You probably know that plants help to keep our air clean by producing fresh oxygen for us to breathe. One tree on its own removes about 26 pounds of carbon emissions from the air every year, balancing out 11,000 miles of car emissions (Plant Something). They also reduce levels of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, ozone, and dust in the air. However, that’s not all they do.

Growing plants in and around your home benefits you in a multitude of ways. Beautiful landscaping adds property value to your home and lowers your energy bills because of the shade they provide. That’s more green in your pocket and in the world! Plants also clean the water around you by filtering out pollutants and suspended solids in water runoff. Having enough greenery in your environment will even lower your heart rate. There are so many ways that plants improve your health.

The plants themselves are not the only reason you should plant something—gardening as an activity has many benefits as well. For instance, it is proven to relieve stress, improve problem-solving skills, and boost your confidence. Gardening daily, weekly, or even monthly has numerous physical health benefits too. It can increase your strength, endurance, dexterity, and sensory awareness. Additionally, it boosts your immune system and helps your brain function better.

Since you’ve now read about all these incredible health benefits, I bet you can’t wait to get out in a garden and plant something.

There’s No Time to Waste!

When it comes to helping the environment, there is no time to waste. Throw out those chemical-filled cleaning supplies and opt for earth-friendly, cruelty-free products instead. Until June 15th, 2016, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day® is donating $5 to the American Community Garden Association for every purchase made on their site (towards a $10,000 donation). The ACGA is a non-profit organization that works to build communities by increasing community gardening across the United States. You have the opportunity to help yourself (you’ll have a cleaner home) and the environment.

Now you know how important it is to plant something. Sprucing up your home with some new plants—it’s a quick and inexpensive activity that has a huge impact.
