Reasons Why Women Make Great Business Owners

Being a young, female business owner is no easy gig; but I love every minute of it. I love that I do something different every day, have to meet deadlines, and inspire and motivate other women like myself. While I am new to owning a business, I feel like I have done this job all my life; juggling tasks, meeting deadlines, and feeling a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. That’s when it hit me, women are predispositioned to be great business owners. Here I describe the reasons for why I feel this way.

Every woman already has two jobs

I feel that this concept is best quoted in the 1950’s film “All About Eve” in which the main character Margo Channing states: “That’s one career all females have in common, whether we like it or not: being a woman. Sooner or later, we’ve got to work at it, no matter how many other careers we’ve had or wanted.” When I heard this quote I thought to myself, yes! When it comes to managing our looks, we do our best to meet the unrealistic beauty standards portrayed by the media. We have to work twice as hard in the workplace and still be able to manage our households, finances, etc. If you ever thought that you could not handle the pressure of wearing many hats as a business owner, think again. Chances are, you are already doing a juggling act: being a woman!

We are natural networkers

I see this every day when I leave my house. Women have no problem talking to new people about their hair, clothes, or even about the sale going on in aisle two. People ask me where I got my shoes; I ask them about their cute ensemble. Networking is just being able to do that same thing; Talking to others about something you have in common, and building it from there. Who knows what opportunities could come about in your next random conversation.

Human resource training starts at home

While this is not partial to just women, a common stereotype that is usually downplayed in the workforce is that we are “too emotional.” While this cannot be true for all women, for those who are considered “emotional” I say…so what! I call it following your gut based on your upbringing on treating others how you would like to be treated. If you get a bad feeling about how you treated your employee, then let your conscience be your guide into resolving the issue. Following your gut is usually the best way to go.

We are strong

It’s like Beyonce’ says in her song “Run the World”, “Strong enough to bear the children; then get back to business.” It’s true! Women have an incredible ability to balance these things. How we keep it all together, is a mystery within itself. Being able to have all of these abilities are what makes a great business owner. All you need is the will to do it. Chances are you have already developed the skills you need over the years and they will fall into place as they need to. So while owning a business is not for everyone, for those of you who have dreamed of having your own but just did not feel like you were capable of achieving this goal, do yourself a favor and think about all that you already do. After that, it’s in the bag.
