Bob Lang grew up in the college town of Kent, Ohio and began working with wood shortly after high school. His professional career began building speaker cabinets for professional sound systems, followed by a few years repairing wooden boats on Lake Erie. An apprenticeship in a commercial cabinet shop in Cleveland followed a stint as lead scenic artist at an aquatic theme park. In the 1980s, he designed and created furniture and accessories, and exhibited his work at art shows and galleries across the country. He returned to the world of professional cabinetmaking in the mid-1980s, until he joined the staff of Popular Woodworking in 2004. Along the way he owned his own shop, worked in a number of shops creating high end work for the residential and commercial markets. He rose through the ranks and at the end of that phase of his career, he was managing and engineering projects that ranged in scope from individual pieces of furniture to multi-million dollar interior projects. His first magazine articles appeared in WoodShop News and Fine Woodworking in 1999.

His interest in furniture of the American arts & crafts period of the early 20th century began early on, and in 2001 his first book “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” was published, followed shortly thereafter by “More Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture”, “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Interiors” and “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Inlays and Hardware”. After joining the magazine, he wrote “The Complete Kitchen Cabinetmaker” and “Shop Drawings for Greene & Greene Furniture”, published by Cambium Press (now Fox Chapel) and “Drafting & Design for Woodworker’s” and co-authored (with Glen Huey) “Furniture in the Southern Style”. Bob began doing illustrations for the magazine in 2008 and was promoted to executive editor in 2010. Bob’s first self-published book in interactive PDF format “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” appeared in 2010, and a second interactive PDF book “Building Blocks of SketchUp” was published in 2013. Bob’s printed books are among the few woodworking books published in the last 15 years to remain in print. His philosophy in publishing is the same as it is when building furniture, make something of the finest possible quality, and build it to last.

this is a great book for the wood worker project maker. great price
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2018
The book has lots of different Arts and Crafts furniture but is somewhat short on details. There is enough info to build the pieces but you'll have to do a fair bit of examining the drawings to get all the details right. On a different level it gives you a good idea of how these pieces were constructed so you can design your own projects using the construction methods of a bygone era. For the most part the book takes into account wood movement that the originals didn't always compensate for.

Inn general the book is really good, nice bit on construction techniques techniques, and the inlay and hardware information is hard to find wooden elsewhere.
Plans are fine for an experienced woodworker. Lang does sell more detailed plans if you feel uncomfortable working from the book.
Be careful on the cut lists. There are a lot of typesetting issues that can lead you astray. (A printed thickness of 13/16 where the actual dimension is 1 3/16).

This book has an extension list of craftsman furniture. The drawings are very detailed showing all the basic Contruction and also include a materials list. There are no instructions so if you cannot build from drawings this may not be helpful to you. Its nice to have all the dimensions rather then trying to figure them out from a picture. It also have detailed drawings of all the period inlays if you are looking to make a replica item. Well worth the money. You would typically pay more then the price of the book for a single plan and here you get 61 plans

This book is in pristine condition, not the fault of the seller, however the author left out a lot of the dimensions in the drawings, and could use more information. The book in itself is something every pro and hobbyists can certainly gain from having in their library.

Its a decent book but you need to know what your doing for everything this would go well with a stack of other books that tell you how to do the stuff in this book

This book is a great resource. I’m building a library table similar to one of the tables featured in the book. Confirmed a few dimensions and got some ideas. After reading other reviews I think it is worth emphasizing that this is a book of shop drawings. It is not a complete set of build plans for each piece. If you are designing your own piece, this book will help you with key dimensions and design features. It will not give you a paint by numbers guide for building each piece.
