The cosmopolitan is the perfect drink for a sophisticated – as well as impossibly fun and charming – woman. Its cute color and dainty glass hide quite the kick. Make this classic drink at home for a small get-together with friends and really spice up the night.
Tools for the Cosmo
You’ll need basic bartending tools, including a large mixing glass, a wire or coal strainer, a bar spoon and ice. It is also good to have cocktail glasses because the cosmopolitan is supposed to be served straight up (in a cocktail glass with no ice).
Remember the Ingredients
Bartenders memorize the ingredients to drinks by remembering little sayings. Because the cosmopolitan is a variation of the kamikaze, it helps to memorize this one first: “very tragic landing.” It stands for vodka, triple sec, and lime juice. Cranberry juice makes the difference in the two drinks (that’s the pink part), so the saying becomes “very tragic crash landing.” Cosmos are traditionally garnished with lemon, but thanks to “Sex and the City,” it is more popular to serve it with lime.
How to Make It
Start by filling the large mixing glass halfway with ice. Next, add one ounce of vodka, a half-ounce of triple sec, a half-ounce of lime juice, and a half ounce of cranberry juice. Use the mixing spoon with both hands to stir the mixture. Next, use the strainer to drain the drink into the cocktail glass, being sure not to fill the drink too close to the top. Garnish with lemon or lime, and enjoy girls’ night!
