How Much Should You Spend on Your Wedding? [Video]

By  |

Congratulations, you’re engaged! And if you’re like every woman who inhabits this planet, the minute after that ring goes on your finger is the minute you’re going to start planning your wedding. And weddings cost money. A lot of money. And unless you have thousands of dollars in savings, you’re going to have to take the time to build one. The average engagement is one to two years. And the cost of your wedding will have to depend on how much you can save a month in those two years. Check out this short video to see how easy it is to budget and save.

There are tons of tools you can use online to help plan your wedding. Cost of a Wedding is a great site; they’ll break down your average costs based on your zip code, and break down every last item in your wedding. The Knot is a wonderful site because they have articles explaining, in detail, how you can save. At The Knot, you can find an answer to any question.

I was recently married in May of this year as well! My husband and I both already had a savings and we continued to build (and wipe it out) for a year. We ended up spending $7,600 on our wedding. And including what our parents spent, the wedding cost a little over $12,000. The guest count was very small, so we were able to splurge on the food. A family member is a DJ and gifted us his service. Because of this, we were able to save hundreds of dollars. I did my hair, my bridesmaids’ hair, and all of our makeup. That saved me a few hundred dollars as well. I bought jewelry from Forever 21 for myself and my bridesmaids. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to have a romantic wedding.

In retrospect, I wish we had spent less on our wedding. We spent about $20K, though that includes the money my mom put toward the wedding. We both have large families, so it was difficult to cut the budget down!

Erin, I feel the same way. We just got married in Aug and in the end, probably spent about $23K, give or take. It’s kind of astonishing really because I was the girl who lamented about NOT spending a fortune on just one day. The guest list wasn’t particulary large so again, it’s astonishing how much we spent.
