The 5 Sexiest Movies Before 50 Shades of Grey
50 Shades of Grey may be one of the most anticipated erotic romance films in the history of cinema, but it is by far not the first movie to explore themes of sexuality and desire. As you all wait with bated breath for Valentine’s Day, let us reminisce about the sexiest films that came before.
1. 9 1/2 Weeks (1986)
When Elizabeth begins dating John, she is initially disturbed by his sexual appetite but she quickly becomes infatuated with him. She soon becomes involved with sexual practices she never thought herself capable of. This film contains masturbation, whipping, prostitution, porn, and a main character with a steadily deteriorating mental state. What more could you desire from an erotic drama?
2. Body Heat (1981)
Kathleen Turner plays Matty, a beautiful woman who starts a racy affair with William Hurt (Ned) behind her husband’s back. As the threat of exposure increases, they begin plotting to murder her husband. But Matty wants to make sure she inherits his fortune despite a pesky prenuptial agreement. There’s a lot of steamy, evil sex and betrayal on all sides.
3. Dangerous Liasons (2012)
One of the most recent adaptations of the 18th century French novel Dangerous Liasons is set in 1930s Shanghai. Jang Dong-gun plays a handsome womanizer who hopes to win the affections of previous lover (a woman as manipulative and attractive as he is) by wooing a beautiful, goodhearted widow. Although this initially starts out as a game, the stakes rise when he starts to fall for the beautiful widow. I’m a big fan of the novel and all other adaptations!
4. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
After Alice (Nicole Kidman) reveals her sexual fantasies to her husband William (Tom Cruise), he grows increasingly interested in having an affair with another woman. When he learns of a highly exclusive party (which requires that one must don a mask, costume, and have a password to enter) he breaks all of the rules to attend and finds much more than he bargained for when he discovers the exclusive party is actually a cult’s sexual ritual.
5. The Sookie-Bill Era of True Blood (2008-2014)
Let us never forget Sookie and Bill’s most epic love. Granted, True Blood took a turn for the worse in the latter seasons, but the first few seasons are golden. When Sookie and Bill finally become an item after a prolonged courting, it’s totally worth it. Not only is it completely romantic, but it’s super sexy too!
Torchwood (yes, it’s streaming on Netflix!) is Doctor Who’s sexier, darker brother. Sex with aliens, sex with men, sex with women…you get the point. Torchwood has it all. The show follows a small group of alien hunters who try to protect Cardiff, and the world, from alien threat. In addition, the show is chock full of sexy drama. I will admit, you need to have some nerd cred to really get into this one.
