No one wants to be a Negative Nancy, or, as we call it in my house, a “Crabby Gabby”, but sometimes life can make rainbows negative. So, how do you shake off those black moods and let a little positivity shine on your life?
Here’s 6 easy tricks to brightening up your outlook on things.
Wait, wait, wait, that’s like, logic, right? Yep. Think happier things and as easy as it seems you’ll start having a positive outlook. Now, this might sound hard, but it really isn’t too bad. When your grumbling about traffic, think about the good song on the radio, the (hopefully!) nice weather, that joke you heard the other day, something silly your pet did, or a memory that makes you smile. Just think of something positive.
Happy people are (generally) grounded people. Don’t set your goals in another galaxy, try having something good for dinner instead. Baby steps. Setting obtainable goals helps you reach them, which makes you happier. Deciding you want to have your dream job straight out of college might end up frustrating you if you don’t get it. I’m not saying don’t try, I’m just saying keep your hopes realistic, and let the rest slide off as, “I did my best. Though I didn’t get the job, I did get to eat pizza for dinner.”
Nothing invites brooding more than sitting alone and thinking about how your life is flittering away. Get up and go outside. Take a walk, hang with friends, find a hobby, keeping busy will keep you happy and give you less time to get all moody.
Did you know, smiling can make you happy? Sometimes lighting your mood is as simple as “sitting happy”. Don’t hunch your shoulders to sit in the fetal positing pondering life’s bigger questions. Bounce around, even dance! Try dance exercising. It’s this new thing where people listening to the favorite music, and dance to it. Works your muscles and lets you have fun.
Channel Emotions Through Something
Sometimes negativity can’t be forgotten or brushed away. Maybe it can be for a while, but it slowly creeps back. Find a way to “channel” those negative emotions into something: writing, drawing, exercising, video games, something, anything. Find away to drain those negative feelings away, and then make sure you leave them there. Write a journal entry then burn it. Don’t let it lurk in your room, waiting for you to pick it up and remember what made you so angry in the first place.
Altruism can make you happy. Doing good to others will bloom butterflies in your stomach and help you smile. Being kind feels good, just like lying feels wrong. Plus, humans play off each other emotions. Good and bad emotions can be shared, so go ahead and help someone, creating a happy environment for both.
I’m not promising that following these tips will make you the happiest person on earth, but it might help you smile. Just try it and see if those dark thoughts get replaced with an overall happier outlook.
