It is a tough time being in the job market, Millennials. The cost of living is higher than ever before and good jobs are few and far between. The last thing you would want is to finally find your dream job, but not be paid well. Have no fear, millennials! I have a few tricks up my sleeve that can help anyone get the salary that you desire.

Tip #1: Always do your research.

This tip is very important for job searchers. By making sure that you do your research on the company that you would like, you can figure out what the range of salaries there are so you don’t shoot too high or sell yourself short. This way, you know exactly what to expect. A website that I personally love to use is Glassdoor.com. With this site, you have real employees—past and present—who give you an inside look within almost any company. You can learn just about everything, from salaries to the mannerisms of your soon-to-be boss. Doing your research on the company is great! I’ve used this trick a ton of times during interviews, and the interviewer is always impressed that I actually took the time to learn about their business. So this trick is just a win/win all around!

Tip #2: You’re Different (In A Good Way!)

You are already in the interview for (hopefully) your next job. So, you have to make a better-than-great impression on your interviewer. Emphasize that not only are you a great fit for their company, but also that you can also help them grow with your particular skill set. Bring a list of all of your accomplishments, personal and professional, to show that you are accomplished and good at what you do. Anything that would make you stand out against the crowd—in a good way—can sway your interviewer towards hiring you with the pay that you want. You just have to convince them that they cannot live without you working for them, so negotiating your pay should be a hell of a lot easier for you!

Tip #3: Take The Perks Into Account

Perks are awesome! You might be lucky enough to have some pretty good perks, like a company car, even though your salary is not quite where you would like it to be. Some perks are not as obvious as a company car. Some places could just offer an awesome discount, and for some people, that is enough! Just do what works for you.

Tip #4: Counter An Offer—But Only Once!

No employer wants just a yes woman. You are expected to make a counteroffer, but make it count because, after the one, the hiring manager can get annoyed and will throughout your resume and everything that was discussed in the interview. If it is drawn out, everyone ends up frustrated and no one really wants to start a new job on a bad note. And just as a mini-tip, which is pretty much common sense, NEVER bad mouth an employer on social media. You never know who is going to see what you say and it more than likely to bite you in the ass later.

Tip #5: Being Patient Is Key!

Once the interview is over and you are offered a job with a certain salary, ask if you can give them an answer by the end of the week. This way, you can review everything with your family and compare it to your other job offers! Once you are ready to tell your new job your answer, let them know that you are excited—but not desperate. You don’t know how many people are being interviewed so you have to be cool about your job offer.

Finding the job that is just right for you is not easy. It is a long and usually quite frustrating process. But if you are good at what you do and are confident about it, you will eventually find exactly what you have been working towards. Tell me how these tips have helped you in your job search and if you have  your own, let me know! Finding a new job is a science, and the more tips and tricks that you have, the better off that you will find yourself! Happy job hunting, Millennials!
