Ladies, this isn’t the 18th century anymore! Gone are the days when the greatest ambitions of womanhood were marriage and minions. As the number of college educated women continues to rise, diverse options and variety in the career department become consequential side effects. This begs the question, what are the top paying jobs for women today? Check out the list of top 5, according to Forbes.

Pharmacist

US News sites their average yearly salary  as $116,670. It’s also indicated that the field is divided pretty evenly with 52% being women. What does a pharmacist do exactly? There are essentially three types: a community or  healthcare pharmacist, and a specialist. Basically, a pharmacist who works in a retail setting (like a CVS or Walgreens) “dispenses medications, counsels patients on the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications, and advise physicians about medication therapy. They also advise patients about…durable medical equipment or home healthcare supplies.” One who works in a healthcare setting (a hospital or doctor’s office) have the same responsibilities in addition to creating regimens and prepare injections. A specialist can focus on things like cancer treatments or even those for mental health. “Compounding—the actual mixing of ingredients to form medications—is a small part of a pharmacist’s practice, because most medicines are produced by pharmaceutical companies in standard dosages and drug delivery forms.” Research, development, and testing might also be required.  Pharmacy is a great career to get into, Athona have many different career paths for you to go down.

Chief Executive

The average yearly earnings of a chief executive run pretty high at $250,000. However, this field is not nearly as evenly divided with women comprising a mere 26%. This is a little more difficult to describe as their roles truly vary from company and company. “The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the principal executive in many private organizations. Many CEOs also hold the title of Chairman and President. While each private company defines these roles differently, the CEO is almost always the primary leader for the strategy and operations of an organization.”

Lawyer

To me, this job has always seemed like a good fit for anyone who’s ever been on a debate team in high school or college. Now imagine them making $113,530 on average. Yeah. This is actually a pretty interesting job that requires more than shouting, tears, and drama. Lawyers “conduct research and analyze prior cases, solicit testimony from witnesses and draw up legal documents pertaining to lawsuits, appeals and deeds.” A key to prevent being bogged down by having to remember laws for ever single thing is to specialize in a particular field or industry, things like custody, business law, intellectual property…car wrecks…This career however does require serious dedication and long hours, so if you absolutely cherish your social life it probably won’t work for you.

Nurse Practitioner

Now would be the perfect time to take up this position for two reasons. First, the healthcare reform is making it possible for many more people to get medical attention, thus requiring more bodies to help all these new people. Second, the Baby-Boomers. As this massive generation continues to age, they too are needing a great deal of medical care. These two groups combined means a lot of job openings. The average pay for a nurse practitioner to “take patient histories, perform physical exams, order labs, analyze lab results, prescribe medicines, authorize treatments and counsel patients and families on continued care” is $89, 960. Nurses can also find a niche in things like dermatology, cardiology, oncology, or even adults or children. You can branch out or confine yourself to a certain group; it’s your choice.

Computer and Information Systems Manager

Alright, don’t lose attention immediately after reading the job title! The average salary for this position is a well-earned $72, 560 and what these people do is pretty darn important. They keep everything in operation especially for schools, businesses, and stores. Every place operates with a network and computer, they are the new brick and mortar of a business. This fast-paced job can be about as stressful as a lawyer’s. They’ve got people depending on them to keep things running smoothly and consistently, their jobs also require research when figuring out what’s causing an issue and finding a solution. Developing updates for existing software, training clients and employees on how to use it are other common duties. Computers and servers have become so vital to our society, so why not learn as much as we can about it? They are seriously powerful tools that we have barely begun to explore.

Notice things like teacher, secretary, and librarian weren’t mentioned just now? Not that there is anything wrong with those, but the key word here is “variety;” we’re not limited anymore so don’t be afraid to take a firm step into the unknown! Some of the positions and salaries might seem ambitious but it is important to take advantage of these options and at least try. That’s the best way to learn and know for sure.
