Find a Happy Place: The Guide to Meditation

Recently I decided to pick up meditation. As a recent college graduate, I’m not sure of the best route for my career choice and post-grad life. I recently decided to move back home, but I’m not certain if I will be the happiest there. On the same token, it might not be a wise choice to leave. I want the right answer, but I can’t think clearly. There are too many people trying to give me advice; I’m lost within all the chatter and buzz.
A close friend mine, Livi, always talks about meditating. At first I thought it was a bunch of tomfooleries, but with all the confusion from external voices, it’s my only choice. Here is what I have learned so far!
What You Need:
- A quiet place with very few distractions
- A comfortable posture, sitting, standing, lying down, etc.
- A focus of attention
- A positive attitude that allows you not to get frustrated with yourself when distracting thoughts enter your mind
- You can have candles or soft music playing in the background!
Introduction to Meditation Techniques
- First, find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lie. (You can invest in a meditation chair!!)
- Close your eyes.
- Be sure to breathe naturally. Do not try to control your breathing.
- Clear your mind. To keep thoughts from entering, focus your attention on your breathing’s natural rate. Remember do not try to control your breathing, this is just a way to keep your mind from thinking about other things. If your mind wanders do not get frustrated. Instead, attempt to redirect your attention to your breathing. Try this for five minutes and steadily increase each day.
You’ll be well on your way to becoming a more relaxed and meditative person.
