A lot of people study in their room. They either do this out of necessity, or because they simply enjoy the peace and quiet. While many people can study in their room quite easily, others struggle with the distractions or comfort of somewhere so familiar. If you must study in your room, it is crucial to make sure you have a quiet place that allows you to concentrate. So, here are five ways to fix your room for a more effective study session.
Use a Desk
It is important to have a place to sit. Do not study in bed or lounge on the floor. You need a desk to study. Make sure the desk is large enough to fit a computer, multiple books and a paper pad. Not only will a desk increase efficiency, it will also put you in the right frame of mind. Set it up exactly the way you want it, so that when it’s time to get down to business you know where everything is. Remember, if you were to study at the library you would sit at a desk and not on the floor. There’s a reason for this!
Remove any distractions from your room. A lot of people, especially college students, have too many distractions in their sanctuary. One of the main distractions is your television. Put away your leisure books and get rid of anything that may take your attention away from studying. If you need a short break, you can go to the other room to relax for a few minutes. Doing so will allow you to keep on task when necessary.
Remember to always study alone. Having a girlfriend or a boyfriend in the room will make studying very difficult. Study time should be for one thing: studying. While many people love to be around their partners, it creates an unnecessary distraction that will make studying difficult. If you study with someone, make sure you are studying with them for the right reasons. That is, you should not study with someone because they make it more fun. If that’s the case, then you’re likely not working hard enough.
Sleep or Study
If you plan to utilize your room for studying quite often, it’s good to get into a certain mindset. That is, your room should only be used for two things: sleeping and studying. If you read for fun, or like to watch movies, you should do so elsewhere. This will make your room more conducive to studying as you will get used to the idea of working hard in your room and having fun elsewhere. You’d be surprised how powerful simple attitudes can be in terms of seeing results.
This tip isn’t relevant to everyone, but more and more people are being diagnosed with ADD or other learning disabilities. If this is the case for you then you should consider utilizing “power hours.” In other words, head to your room for one hour at a time. Now you’re “in the zone.” Study intensely. After that hour, take a break by going for a walk or doing something other than studying to clearly switch gears. You still need to spend the same amount of time studying, but this method will actually use your home base as an advantage since it can be hard to return to a library or other common area repeatedly. If your room is solely for studying, then you can rest assured knowing that every time you head there, you will only be doing one thing.
It is difficult for many to study in their room, but if you follow one or more of these steps you will have a much greater chance of success. That said, these aren’t the only solutions out there. Always be cognizant of the things that are inhibiting you from doing the best you can, and seek solutions to change them.
